GNU social alternatives
GNU social is a free and open source software microblogging server. It is a decentralized, federated network providing service via client-server and peer-to-peer architectures. It allows clients to communicate with each other by exchanging specially-formatted strings called ‘statuses’ or ‘tweets.’ It is a server that implements an open standard for social networking. It allows users to publish short messages, or “tweets,” and follow other users’ posts.
It can be used to create social networks such as microblogging, social networking, or even forum sites. It is designed to be compatible with Twitter’s API, allowing Twitter users to seamlessly migrate to GNU social. It has the ability to be deployed on infrastructure operated by the users themselves, e.g., via a cooperative and using federation through established providers like GNU Social, Diaspora, and Pump.io. Its aim is to support and connect the activities of its members.
