GTK alternatives
GTK is a cross-platform, open-source toolkit that you can use to create application GUI. It makes extensive use of cross-platform widgets that can be re-used across any application, even with different rendering engines. For example, a button widget can be created that will look the same on Windows, OS X, and Linux. This allows for a consistent user experience across multiple applications.
Compared to most other toolkits, GTK is an exception in that it will automatically handle font rendering for itself if it cannot find the font you are asking for. This means that if you specify Arial as your font but do not have Arial installed on your system, it will substitute another similar-looking font instead. An important part of GTK is the GIMP Drawing Kit which is the lowest layer that every rendering engine uses to communicate with the graphics hardware and drivers on each platform.
GDK provides a low-level interface that lets applications control the hardware on each platform. Every rendering engine can provide its own backend, which is then responsible for translating GDK callbacks into native-executable graphics calls for each platform. All in all, GTK is a great tool that you can consider among its alternatives.
