MRTG (Multi Router Traffic Grapher) is an integrated Internet traffic monitoring tool for viewing and monitoring the traffic load on network devices and the throughput (bandwidth) between the nodes on the internet. It has been designed to run on a variety of Unix platforms, including Linux, FreeBSD, BSDI, SunOS, Solaris, and HP-UX. Data can be viewed in real-time or retrieved on-demand for examination of trends and historical movements of the monitored systems.
It requires no daemons or agents to be installed on remote systems and provides a variety of graphs, including daily traffic, monthly traffic, hourly traffic, number of jittery connections, top talkers, and even a simple web server for remote viewing of the statistics. It is often used to monitor router traffic and displays traffic in various ways: ASCII graph, Cisco-like running-sum bar graph, and HTML page with an embedded JPEG image.
The graphical display of traffic looks like a telephone pole, with lines descending from the left side of the graphic to the right. Each line represents an IP subnet, and the number is the number of packets per second. MRTG visualizes traffic with a self-contained web server and helps network administrators discover where network bandwidth is being consumed. Other functions include page presentation, user authentication, and data graphing.
